5 Features You Didn't Know CouchCritic Had
Beyond basic comments — timestamps, presence, spoiler-free mode, emoji reactions, and star ratings. Here's everything CouchCritic can do.
Most people install CouchCritic to leave a comment on a Netflix show. But there's a lot more under the surface. Here are five features that power users love.
1. Timestamped comments
When you're watching a show, toggle the timestamp option before posting. Your comment gets tagged with the exact moment in the video — like "12:34" — and other viewers can click it to jump straight to that scene.
This is incredibly useful for:
- Pointing out details people might have missed - Reacting to a specific line or visual - Starting a discussion about a particular moment without spoiling the rest
Think of it like SoundCloud's timed comments, but for TV shows and movies.
2. Live presence
Ever wonder if anyone else is watching the same thing as you right now? The presence bar at the top of the comment panel shows you. You'll see avatars of other CouchCritic users who are currently on the same title.
It updates in real-time with a heartbeat system. When you see other viewers online, it makes the experience feel less like shouting into the void and more like watching with friends.
3. Spoiler-free mode
You know about marking individual comments as spoilers. But did you know there's a global toggle?
Hit the "Spoiler-free" checkbox at the top of the panel and every spoiler-tagged comment disappears completely — not blurred, just gone. This is perfect when you're mid-season and want to browse comments without any risk.
Your preference persists across sessions, so you set it once and forget about it.
4. Emoji reactions
Not every thought needs a full comment. Sometimes a scene is so good you just need to drop a 🔥 or 😂.
Every comment has a reaction bar with six emoji options: 😂 👍 ❤️ 😮 😢 🔥. Tap one to react. The counts are visible to everyone, so popular comments get a visual signal of how people feel about them.
Reactions are especially useful for replies — you can acknowledge someone's take without cluttering the thread.
5. Star ratings and reviews
CouchCritic isn't just comments. Every title has a rating panel where you can give 1-5 stars and optionally write a review. The average rating and review count are visible to everyone.
This is the feature Netflix removed in 2018 and never replaced. Stars are simple, intuitive, and — combined with written reviews from real viewers — far more useful than a thumbs up/down or a "match percentage."
Your rating is tied to your account, so you can update it later if a show grows on you (or falls off).
Bonus: it works on detail pages too
CouchCritic doesn't just work during playback. When you're browsing a show's detail page on Netflix or Prime Video, comments appear inline below the show info — no side panel needed. This means you can read what people think before you decide to watch.
All five of these features are available on the free tier. Install CouchCritic and try them out.
